PLAY DVD

The story began in 2005 with this official announce on the Peter Gabriel Web site:

DTS audio on PLAY DVD - 6:12:03 PM on Tue 21 Dec

Since the release of the PLAY DVD we have become aware of an issue affecting the DTS soundtrack on the latest generation of surround amplifiers.

PLAY is the first disc produced using a new DTS encoder and it seems that the version we used has set a flag within the DTS audio stream that can cause a 30db reduction in volume.

We have only experienced the issue on a Denon AVR-3805 amplifier (kindly lent to us by Denon UK), although it may be more widespread as new audio decoder chips reach the consumer market in other products. Reading through our DVD forum, our experience would tie in with the comments of people on the boards . A 30db volume reduction is very noticeable, so the DTS audio heard through these amplifiers is going to be both disappointing, and give a you big shock if you turn it up and then flip back to one of the other audio tracks, or navigate back to a menu.

Only the latest amplifiers are reading the 'Dialogue Normalization" setting in the DTS audio which is causing the volume reduction. Other amplifiers are simply ignoring this information, so during the product development and testing, and to most consumers the DTS was and still is the best sounding audio on the disc.

We are currently working with DTS, Warner Vision and Denon to find a solution, and will keep you posted.

Please let us know if you have experienced this problem on any other equipment.

When I discover this announce, one year after its publication, I understood why my Denon AVR 1705 was playing this DVD at -30dB ! It was a big and incredible Mastering Error ! So I decided to work on my DTS Parser v1.1 to see what’s wrong with the Dialog Normalisation inside the DTS streams. And I found effectively, that it was set to -30dB ! The funny stuff, is that setting right bits inside the stream, it is possible to REPAIR the DTS tracks from this DVD !! Now, my new DTSParser is able to set Dialog Normalisation to 0dB.

One year after the official announce, nothing seems to be done for customers, so I publish my solution:

First you have to use some tools to do the job. This is legal if you bought the DVD !

IfoEdit and VobEdit: http://www.ifoedit.com/

DVDDecrypter: http://www.mrbass.org/dvdrip/

DVDFab Platinium: http://www.dvdidle.com/fr/dvd-fab-platinum.htm

Nero: http://www.nero.com/

So, here we go....

Step 1: Rip the DVD on your hard drive

Use DVDDecrypter. Select Mode/File, and rip the entire DVD.

dvddecrytper

You should obtain a folder with VOB files (and others like IFO or BUP).

Step 2: Extract DTS streams for VOB files

This can be done with VobEdit. This step is little bit boring because you cannot use VobEdit on the entire DVD. You have to use it on each single VOB file. Somes VOB files are menu so don’t extract stream from them. Here the list of relevant VOB with DTS 24/96:

VTS_02_1.VOB (track 1, Father son)
VTS_03_1.VOB (track 2, SledgeHAmmer)
VTS_04_1.VOB
VTS_05_1.VOB

...

VTS_33_1.VOB (The nest that sailed the sky)

To use VobEdit, click on “Open” button, select a VOB track, for example VTS_02_1.VOB, then hit “Demux”. Check “Demux all video streams” and “Demux all audio streams”. Hit “Ok” and demuxing will start on a folder of your choice....

vobedit

Four files should be created:

VTS_02_1.m2v: the video clip
VTS_02_1.81.ac3: the dolby digital (stereo)
VTS_02_1.80.ac3: the dolby digital (5.1)
VTS_02_1.8a.dts: the DTS 24/96

Step 3: Select all DTS files in DTSParser

Now we can select the .DTS files of your choice  in DTSParser, with the “Add DTS file...” button. Here, VTS_02_1.8a.dts and VTS_04_1.8a.dts:
Check “Rebuild Stream” and “Remove Dialog Normalization”, then hit “Start Batch”.

 DTSParser02

DTSParser will create 2 new files.

VTS_02_1.8a.dts.fixed.dts
VTS_04_1.8a.dts.fixed.dts

Step 4: Create a new DVD structure with the new DTS files created by DTSParser

This can be done with IfoEdit. This step is also boring. You have to use IfoEdit for each DTS. It can’t handle multiple titles and must be restarted after each multplexing. (We merge all titles in the next step).

1: For instance, open IfoEdit, then go to the menu “DVD Author”, and select “Author new DVD”

ifoedit

2: Select the Video track of your choice, here VTS_02_1_m2v
3. Select the fixed DTS audio track produced by DTSParser
4: click on the DTS filename then select an unspecified language.
5: select an empty directory
6. hit “OK”, multiplexing should start.

IfoEdit will produce 5 files:

VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.BUP

VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_0.BUP

7: Exit from IfoEdit. and remove the *_TS.* files

8: create a directory for the final mastering, for example C:\Play
(DON’T use this directory with IfoEdit)

9: move the VTS files into this directory. If you are doing this for the second time (and after), you have to rename the 3 files before moving
because, you will delete your previous work. Rename as shown in this table:

This is an example if you plan to use 3 tracks (02,04 and 15):

Track

IfoEdit result

rename and move to C:\Play

VTS_02_1.8a.dts.fixed.dts

VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_0.BUP

VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_0.BUP

VTS_04_1.8a.dts.fixed.dts

VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_0.BUP

VTS_02_0.IFO
VTS_02_1.VOB
VTS_02_0.BUP

VTS_15_1.8a.dts.fixed.dts

VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_0.BUP

VTS_03_0.IFO
VTS_03_1.VOB
VTS_03_0.BUP

Step 7: Build the final DVD Master

Now your directory “C:\Play” contain your video clip in DVD format: IFO/VOB/BUP for each track.
You have to use a shareware called DVDFab Platinium to build the root description file of your DVD.
The trial version of this tool should be enough for us.

1: Click on “Other Tools”

dvdfab

2: Then select “Create Video Manager”.

3: Select your directory “C:\PLAY”

4: click on “Next” button

Now DVDFab should create two files:

VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.BUP

The final directory should be like this (in this example there is 2 tracks):

VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_02_0.BUP
VTS_02_0.IFO
VTS_02_1.VOB

Now it’s time to burn and test our work !

Step 7: Burn with your favorite software

Open “Nero”, Choose “Create a DVD Video”. Then drag all files from C:\PLAY into Nero, in the folder “VIDEO_TS”. Then burn !

You should try to burn on a DVD+RW in case you goes wrong with this guide.

Now you can test the DVD and enjoy with the fantastic quality of DTS 96/24 !
